Desertification constitutes one of the global international environmental problems whose global importance has been recognised by the international community. Desertification is not new to humankind. In the ancient Middle – East, for instance, the destruction of forests, overgrazing and poor agricultural practices caused a deterioration of the water-absorbing capacity of the land and reduced the amount of rainfall. At the first instance desertification can be understood as degradation of soil.
