Catherine Asher’s Mughal Architecture is a good deal more than a compact, usable history of this huge and complex subject. It is---no disrespect to other scholars intended-—-the only such history ever written. And it has astonishingly few of the mistakes of emphasis, of vision, of detail that would normally be inseparable from such a pioneering enterprise.
