DESCRIPTION

Ground plan and elevation of the Jama Masjid, by a Mughal draughtsman, c.1780. The drawing forms part of the collection of James Chichely Hyde (1789-1867) which was made in India from 1806 to 1837. Most of the drawings are contemporary with his stay in India, but there are few which are similiar to the plans of Delhi associated with Gentil in 1774. This striking plan of the Jama Masjid shows the outer arcades and gateways all in elevation from outside and the great iwan in elevation from inside the courtyard.
