DESCRIPTION

Fig. 21: THE QUTB MINAR, w the Agra artist Latif, c. 1820. This and the drawing of the Jama Masjd are the only drawings of Delhi by Latif in the set of architectural drawngs mostly of Agra collected by Johun Bax by 1820. Standing 72.5 metres tall, the mmaret waIls built as a celebratory victory tower as well as for its normal function to in sue the call to prayer for the adjacent congregational moosque. It was begun by Qutb ai Din Aibak in 1198 and completed by his successor Iltutmish in 1215, although the two upper tiers were rebuilt at later dates, The topmost pavilion was reduced to an arch in Daniell's view drawn in 1789 and even this has now gone, Col. Robert Smith of the Bengal Engineers added a Mughal-style pavilion to the top in 1828. In this view Latif Concentrates particularly on the damage to the stonework. Such defects or later additions Were normally ignored by these artists who wanted to convey rather an ideal image of perfection. Watercolor, 53.5 x 71 cm, British Library, London, Add.Or.1807
