Fig, 49; MIRZA FAKHRUDDIN WITH HIS TREASURER AND PHYSICIAN, by William Carpenter, February 1856, Mirza Fakbruddin (1816-56) was a younger sON of the Emperor Bahadur Shah II but the favourite of his father who wanted to make him his heir apparent overriding the claims of his eldest son Mirza Dara Bakht. Sensitive like his father to literature, he appointed Ghalib (fig. 48) as his court poet in 1854, two years before his untimely death. Watercolour, 35 x 24.7 cm.
