Outside the Agency, Ludlow Castle, there is a carriage waiting for Metcalfe's appearance, the Agent's sowarry of camels and elephants, and an escort of a troop of Skinner's Horse and a company from a Bengal Native Infantry. The house was built in the Civil Lines north of the Kashmiri Gate by Samuel Ludlow (d.1853), a surgeon with the Bengal establishment of the East India Company, who was stationed with the Delhi residency from 1813-31.
