Blowing up the Kashmiri Gate at Delhi, India, 1857. Gate next gained national attention during the Mutiny of 1857. Indian soldiers fired volleys of cannon balls from this gate at the British and used the area to assemble for fighting and resistance. Began as mutiny of sepoys (Indian soldiers of the British East India Company's army) on 10 May 1857, in the town of Meerut. Also known as 1857 War of Independence and India 's First War of Independence.
