The Lahore Gate was the main entrance to Emperor Shah Jahan's Red Fort, or Lal Qila, which he erected in 1639. On May 11, 1857, the collector, commissioner, and magistrate of Delhi, as well as other Europeans, were killed by insurgents on this place when the Revolt of 1857 began. Prior to the 1857 Mutiny, the top chambers were occupied by the "Commandant of the Palace Guard," an appointment created in 1811 when the favourite son of Akbar II (Mirza Jahangir) made a demonstration against the life of Mr. Seton, following which he was sent to Allahabad and imprisoned.
