DESCRIPTION

The Mughal Emperor Shahjahan (1628-58), Mughal, c.1650. Shahjahan is depicted at about the time of his entry into his new capital of Shahjahanabad in 1648. He enjoyed his triumph for only ten years before his illness precipitated a succession crisis and an all-out war between his four sons. He was dethroned by the victor, his third son Aurangzeb, and was imprisoned in the Red Fort at Agra where he died in 1666.
