DESCRIPTION

Fig.2: Mahtab Bagh by a Faizabad draughtman, 1774. Inscribed on the right: Malab Bague; Jardin que fait Alanguir dans l'interieur du palais pour ses femmes a Dely. The Mahtab Bagh or Moonlight Garden in the Red Fort lay to the west of the palace garden, the Hayat Bagh, and was already in existence in Shahjahan's time (Blake, p.42). It was largely ruined by an explosion when munitions were stored there by Ghulam Qadir in 1788, while Syed Ahmed Khan remarks that nothing remained but a board canal. Pen-and-ink and watercolor, 68 x 123 cm. Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Paris, Estampes Od 63/11.
