Fig. 60: NAUTCH AT HINDU RAO'S HOUSE, by a Delhi artist, c. 1840. Hindu Rao was the brother of the Baiza Bai of Gwalior, the widow of Daulat Rao Sindhia. From 1835, he lived in the house on the Ridge named after him. Watercolour, 17.8 x 28.6 cm. British Library, London, Add.Or.4684. Nautches were part of the Mughal way of life in Upper India and those from the dancing girls of Lucknow and Delhi were the most famous.
