PREFACE‘ T0 THE FIRST EDITION. 1883-84. The period fixed by the Punjab Government for the compilation- of the Gazetteer of the Province being limited to twelve months, the Editor has not been able to prepare any original matter for the present work; and his duties have been confined to tln-owing the already existing: material into shape, supplementing it as far as possible h_v contributions obtained from District Ollieers, passing the draft through the press, circulating it for revision, altering it in accordance with the corrections and suggestions of revising officers, and printing and it=Ft|ing the tinal edition. The material available in print for the Gn::eNnr of this :li.~:- trict consisted of the Settlement, lteportn, and n draft (»'n.::-Herr compiled betrreen 1870 and 18?-I by Mr. li'.Cunningl1a111,Barrister- at-Lnvr. Notes on certain points have been supplied by District Ollicers; vrhilc the report on the (‘eases of 1891 has been utilized. Of the present volume, Section A of Ultt'tpi.0t' V (General Adminis- tration), and the whole oi Chapter V I ('l‘o\vns), hare been for tho most part supplied by the Deputy Commissioner; Section A of Chapter III (Statistics of Population) has been tnlten from the Census Report ; while here and there passages have been extracted from Mr. t.'Iunningham’s compilation already referred to. But with these exceptions, the great mass of the text has been taken almost, it not quite verbally from Mr. 11‘ryer's Settlement Report; of the district.
