To such an observer, then, the personal incidents of this first crash, unparalleled in their ruthless barbarity, had significance chiefly as proclaiming that a struggle for Empire had begun—that India was in danger,—and that all possible effort on the part of every ofiicer at his post, of every Englishman in his place, and the most consummate forethought in the application of our reliable resources would be needed to save the country.
