Description
Cananor, St. Angelo Fortress Kannur India Old antique plan by the mapmaker Nicolas Bellin 1756. The map is original as dated and derived from Antonine de Prevost d' Exile's Histoire generale des voyages. St. Angelo's Fort was built in 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India.
In 1663, the Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese and sold it to Ali Raja of Kannur. In 1790 the British who seized control over the fort renovated and equipped it to be their most important military station in Malabar.
Mapmaker Cartographer
Acques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 21 March 1772) Bellin was born in Paris. He was a hydrographer of France's hydrographic office, a member of the Académie de Marine, and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50 year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Minister de la Marine.
