DESCRIPTION

Lokmanya Tilak was born on 1856, his father Shri Gangadhar Tilak and Mother Parvathibai Gangadhar and well known as the Indian Nationalist. During the early 20th century the freedom movement filled with most Extremists. Among them, Tilak also the first one whose thoughts entirely filled with extremism and worked against the British with Extremist activities. He also called as the Father of Hindu Nationalism. Gangadhar maintained close relations with the mass and the first nationalist leader who maintained close relations with the masses.

 

Lokmanya Tilak Early Life:

 

Bal Gangadhar Tilak was born in a Maratha Brahmin family. He was one of the first generation of India who completed his college education. In 1879 he started his career as a private school teacher in Pune and later turned as a journalist. During the teaching period, he set up the Deccan Education Society due to his criticism against Western education system. In leisure periods he participated in radical politics. In January 1890 he founded Poona New English School and had very knowledge in astronomy and Hinduism. Lokmanya had profound knowledge in Sanskrit and Mathematics subjects.

 

Bal Gangadhar Tilak Political Career:

 

In 1880 he decided to join in the national movement against the British rule. For nearly ten years he learned about the political views and world outlook. He changed his attitude after learning about the political views and World Outlook. At the meantime, he started two weekly newspapers the Mahratta and Kesari to enlighten the youth with his views on the society.In 1890 he withdrew from the Deccan Education Society due to some differences with the principle of the college and joined In Indian National Congress.

 

Up to 1897, the society occurred with many political variations. There were many differences between the ideas of Moderate Nationalists and Tilak. Later in 1895 sudden breaking asunder in the Deccan political society and the Maharashtra Nationalists Radical wing formed. Due to the subsequent reasons, Tilak arrests and sentenced to eighteen months imprisonment. In later years he became the symbol of the new age and the chief leader of the Democratic wing of the whole of India.

 

The career in Indian National Congress:

 

Lokmanya Tilak demanded the self-government or Swaraj. His efforts made British introduce the act of marriageable age of a child bride from 10 to 12. This was the first significant reform introduced by British 1857 rebellion. During that period Tilak activities turned as ‘Interference in Hindu Religion. Since then he was considered as a strong Hindu nationalist. In 1908 he was arrested and sent to Mandalay, Burma for imprisonment for six years. Again in 1916 he joined in National Congress and supported Home Rule movement.

 

Books:

 

In 1903, Tilak wrote the book "The Arctic Home in the Vedas". In it, he argued that the Vedas could only have been composed in the Arctics, and the Aryan bards brought them south after the onset of the last ice age. He proposed a new way to determine the exact time of the Vedas. In "The Orion", he tried to calculate the time of the Vedas by using the position of different Nakshatras. The positions of the Nakshtras were described in different Vedas. Tilak wrote "Shrimadh Bhagvad Gita Rahasya" in prison at Mandalay – the analysis of 'Karma Yoga' in the Bhagavad Gita, which is known to be a gift of the Vedas and the Upanishads.

 

Descendants;

 

Tilak's son, Shridhar campaigned for removal of untouchability in late 1920s with dalit leader, Dr. Ambedkar. Both were leaders of the multi-caste Samata sangh. Shridhar's son, Jayantrao Tilak (1921–2001) was editor of the Kesari newspaper for many years. Jayantrao was also a politician from the Congress party. He was a member of the Parliament of India representing Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He was also a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

 

Rohit Tilak, a descendant of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, is a Pune-based Congress party politician. In 2017, a woman with whom he had an extra-marital affair accused him of rape and other crimes. He is currently out on bail in connection with these charges.
